Headlight Homes – David Dumont (12/10/23)
Headlight Homes are homesites that because of their location, are directly in line with vehicle headlights at night. These are homes that are at the ends of streets, or face a street at a curve or corner. Often called Headlight Lots.
Living in a headlight home isn’t a problem unless the floorplan has windows facing the front of the lot that open to a room where bright light at night interferes with the enjoyment of that space. If the front room that gets hit with vehicle headlights is a bedroom, it’s easily remedied by hanging room darkening shades. Go to Factory Direct Blinds and you will most likely find something to help (Room darkening shades and blinds). It can be somewhat more difficult to deal with the light if there’s a transom window over the top of the main windows. Some homeowners will use adhesive tint on the transom window to cut the lights brightness. If it’s a TV room, or a Family Room or Study, room darkening shades might not look great in the space. Room darkening cellular blinds are a good option. New home builders try to be cognizant of building the right plans on the right lots, but this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes a homebuyer wants what they want, and it gets built.
Headlight homes have a positive side as well. Because headlights are illuminating the homesite over and over again thru the night, it makes it more difficult for crooks to hide in your shrubs or skulk around the outside of your home. If the homeowner decides to have security cameras monitor the front of the home, they should be pointed downward to avoid the bright lights overloading the IR night vision of the camera.
Unlike several other types of homesites that have negative factors, headlight homes are a minor inconvenience unless it’s a fact that just happens to get on your nerves. Think about it and decide if it’s something you care about or not, and advise your Realtor if it’s important to you. If you were extremely interested in 2 very similar homes, this could be a reason to pass on one of them.
